Natural Communities of New Hampshire (pdf 5.7 Mb). Hardcopies available for $20.00 (see special order form below). Classification and detailed descriptions of terrestrial, freshwater wetland, and estuarine natural communities in New Hampshire. Includes an overview of major physical features and natural divisions (ecoregions) in New Hampshire. This book consolidates and supercedes all previous NH Natural Heritage classifications of natural communities in the state. 242 pages.

Overview of Natural Communities in New Hampshire (pdf 152 kb). A summary of the major categories of natural communities in New Hampshire. Includes a table that briefly summarizes the characteristics of each major category, along with examples of specific natural communities included in the group. 28 pages.
Key to Upland Forest Communities in New Hampshire (pdf 150 kb). This dichotomous key will allow users to identify upland forest natural community types based on diagnostic tree, shrub, and herbaceous plant species. 15 pages.
Natural Community System Classification (Statewide)
Natural Community Systems of New Hampshire, (pdf 1,603 kb). Hardcopies available by mail for $15.00 each. A companion book to Natural Communities of New Hampshire, this technical document classifies 46 natural community systems for the state and provides detailed information about each. Natural Community Systems are intended to complement natural communities as broad-scale focal units for conservation in the Granite State. 133 pages.

Natural Community Classification and Inventory
Alpine and Subalpine Vegetation of the White Mountains, New Hampshire (2000) – Cutting-edge classification of 15 alpine and subalpine natural communities. 48 pages, maps, figures, 18 color plates.
Atlantic White Cedar Wetlands of New Hampshire (1994) – Classification and description of globally rare Atlantic white cedar swamps, with detailed information on vegetation. 120 pages, figures, maps. Note: a significant portion

Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica Marsh) in New Hampshire (2000) – Definitive assessment of black gum wetlands in New Hampshire. Drawing on inventory data from sites across southern New Hampshire, three variants of the black gum-red maple basin swamp natural community are identified. Also included is an assessment of age structure in these wetlands, which have been found to support trees more than 600 years old. 102 pages, maps, figures, 2 color plates. Bogs and Fens of New Hampshire (2000) – Statewide classification of 26 distinctive open peatland natural communities within 11 ecosystem types. Based on several years of inventory work throughout New Hampshire, it is an outstanding study of these vulnerable systems. 93 pages, maps, figures, 14 color plates.
Calcareous Fens and Riverside Seeps in New Hampshire (1995) – Classification of rare, calcium enriched fens and riverside seeps, most of which support one or more rare plant species. 92 pages, maps, figures. Natural Heritage Inventory of the East Bowl at Mount Sunapee State Park (2003) - A comprehensive assessment of the ecological context, land-use history and present status of the East Bowl of Mount Sunapee. An analysis of historical land use and vegetation information is combined with field survey results to (1) describe the locations of exemplary natural communities in the East Bowl with an emphasis on old forests, (2) describe the state and regional ecological significance of Mount Sunapee’s forest communities, and (3) recommend Natural Area designations. 51 pages, maps, figures, 8 color plates.

Forest History and Significant Natural Features of the Pine River State Forest (2000) – Detailed ecological assessment of the rare plants and natural communities in the 3,200-acre Pine River State Forest. An incisive land-use history is combined with field survey results to describe both what forest types are present and why they occur. This report will be a key resource for land management decisions at the State Forest, as the unusual forest natural communities are dynamic and require some form of fire or disturbance to persist. 54 pages, maps, figures, 6 color plates.

Ecological Inventory of Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site (2005) - Detailed ecological inventory of this component of the National Park System in Cornish, NH. 65 pages, color maps, figures, photos.

Rare and Imperiled Plants of New Hampshire (2000) – The most comprehensive technical listing of New Hampshire’s rare and imperiled plants to date. It includes the scientific names, habitat types, and page references of six primary botanical manuals for 475 species, and notes 252 species for which expert review is required. 205 pages.
